- Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back.
- Make sure your phone is charged before you set off.
- Check in at the agreed times with your buddy or manager.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, leave.
- Keep your emergency contact numbers where you can reach them.
- Carry a personal alarm if your role includes home visits.
Winter driving
- Check conditions before you set off.
- Allow extra time and slow down on icy or wet roads.
- Keep a winter kit in the van: torch, blanket, water, de-icer.
- Clear the whole windscreen before driving.
- If conditions are dangerous, don't travel. Speak to your manager.
- Keep the fuel tank at least half full in cold weather.
First aid
- Call 999 for serious injuries or if someone is unconscious.
- Don't move an injured person unless they're in immediate danger.
- Report every incident.
Reporting an incident
- Report all incidents, including near misses, however minor.
- Report as soon as you can.
- Say what happened, where, when and who was involved.
- Take photos if it's safe to do so.
- Your manager will look into it and confirm what happens next.
